Adult ADHD Assessment

Adult ADHD assessment is a structured professional evaluation of persistent difficulties with attention, organisation, impulsivity and everyday functioning. At Manaha Clinic, it is conducted by an RCI-licensed clinical psychologist and considers current symptoms, childhood history, functional impact and other possible explanations.

ADHD can continue into adulthood and may affect attention, organisation, time management, emotional regulation, relationships, studies and work. Some adults recognise these difficulties only later in life, particularly when increasing responsibilities begin to reveal long-standing patterns.

The assessment is a comprehensive professional evaluation rather than a stand-alone questionnaire. Where relevant, the psychologist may also consider academic and occupational history, along with information from a family member or another person who has known the individual for a long time.

An optional consultation with an appropriate clinician may also be availed where broader clinical input, diagnostic clarification or treatment guidance would strengthen the assessment. Depending on individual requirements, parts of the assessment process may be completed online, in person or through a combination of both.

Could an ADHD Assessment Be Helpful?

An assessment may be worth considering when difficulties with attention, organisation or impulsivity are persistent, occur across different areas of life and interfere with everyday functioning.

Common concerns include:

  • Frequently losing track of tasks or conversations

  • Difficulty starting or completing work

  • Chronic procrastination

  • Poor time management or repeatedly missing deadlines

  • Forgetfulness and losing important items

  • Difficulty organising routines or responsibilities

  • Restlessness or a constant need for stimulation

  • Acting or speaking impulsively

  • Becoming easily overwhelmed by routine demands

  • Inconsistent academic or work performance

  • Emotional reactivity or frustration

  • A long-standing sense of underperforming despite effort

Having some of these difficulties does not necessarily mean that a person has ADHD. Similar concerns may occur with anxiety, depression, sleep problems, stress, trauma, substance use, medical conditions or other neurodevelopmental differences. A comprehensive assessment helps clarify the possible causes.

What Does the Adult ADHD Assessment Involve?

The assessment is conducted by an RCI-licensed clinical psychologist and tailored to the individual. The precise process may vary, but it ordinarily considers the following areas.

Adult speaking with a clinical psychologist during an ADHD assessment

1

Initial Interview

A detailed discussion about the concerns that led you to seek an assessment, when they began and how they affect everyday life.

2

Childhood History

Review of earlier patterns involving attention, organisation, behaviour, school performance and day-to-day functioning.

3

ADHD-Focused Evaluation

Use of structured clinical interviews and validated assessment tools to evaluate patterns of inattention, impulsivity and restlessness.

4

Functional Impact

Understanding how the difficulties affect work, education, relationships, routines, responsibilities and emotional wellbeing.

5

Other Possible Explanations

Considering whether anxiety, depression, sleep problems, stress or other concerns may be contributing to the symptoms.

6

Feedback & Recommendations

A clear explanation of the findings, whether further evaluation may be helpful and the most suitable next steps.

An optional consultation with an appropriate clinician may be added where broader clinical input would strengthen the assessment, interpretation or recommendations.

More Than an Online ADHD Test

A free ADHD screening questionnaire may help identify possible symptoms, but it cannot confirm whether a person has ADHD.

A professional assessment includes a detailed clinical interview, childhood history, functional impact, validated assessment tools and consideration of anxiety, depression, sleep problems, stress and other possible explanations. The questionnaire is therefore one part of the evaluation rather than the complete assessment.

Frequently asked questions

Unsure Whether You Need a Full ADHD Assessment?

You may begin with an initial consultation with one of our Psychiatrists if you are uncertain whether ADHD is the most likely explanation for your difficulties.

Our team can understand your concerns and guide you on whether a formal ADHD assessment, another evaluation or a different form of support may be more appropriate.

Having difficulties with attention, organisation or procrastination does not automatically mean that a person has ADHD. Anxiety, depression, sleep problems, stress and other concerns can sometimes cause similar difficulties.
